Fsking Live Journal

A long time back, a friend setup my blog to syndicate to LiveJournal, which is great - it means my friends who are LJ users can easily keep track of my posts here.

Unfortunately, they can also comment through LiveJournal.

I say unfortunately because the link is one way - I don't get notified that a comment's been posted, and LJ only keeps the last few entries available, so when I remember (as I did today) that someone might have said something interesting, I can only read the comments on the latest half-dozen entries.

And since Syndicated Accounts aren't "real accounts" no one can edit them (so no one can prevent people from posting comments).

Gah!

Too many comments have been submitted from you in a short period of time.

A handful of folks have reporting having my blog tell them "Too many comments have been submitted from you in a short period of time." and suggesting they "try again in a short while."

Turns out the thing all these people had was that they were using the "preview" functionality, and the trivial (but effective at stopping blog post spam) CAPTCHA plugin I use hadn't been correctly hooked up to the preview template. I tried fixing that and it turned out to be non-trivial, so as a temporary thing I disabled Preview entirely.

So, Post or Post Not, there is no Preview.

Trouble Posting Comments?

I've heard from a couple folks that they've been unable to login using their live journal id - since nothing's changed on my side, I'm guessing that LJ has busted their OpenID server or something. If this happens, just post without signing in.

I've also heard that a couple folks have had MovableType tell them they've posted too many comments - this is a generic error that probably means you need to refresh the page and make sure you enter the CAPTCHA correctly.

Or, just email me.

Comments Update

God I hate the SPAM arms race. I've turned on CAPTCHAs and re-enabled anonymous posting.

Comments Re-En-Disabled

I tried re-enabling commenting this morning, and in 30 minutes got 50 spam comments.

So I've turned commenting on for authenticated users only - which means you need either a:
TypeKey ID (free)
LiveJournal Account (free)
or an OpenID.

Or, just email me...

Sheesh.

Comment Spam

In the last two days I've had to deal with several hundred junk comments. So to stem the tide I've temporarily disabled commenting.

MovableType Upgrade

I've just upgraded to version 3.3(2) of Movable Type.

If you see anything strange that may be a result of this change, please let me know.

Anonymous Comments

When I enabled the OpenID login (for LiveJournal users), I had to disable "require email address" to comment. This isn't usually a problem, but someone posted a comment today without providing any identifying information. (It won't show up on the page, 'cause I have comment review enabled, and I haven't published it).

If it was you, please re-post the comment and provide a name + email address.

That is all.

One more for the LJ crowd

I've enabled signins through OpenId, which means you can now (if you want) signin with your LJ account to post comments here. I can't exactly test it, so if you try it and it doesn't work for you, lemme know.

I'm sure you're all a-quiver with anticipation...

Attn: Live Journal Users

It seems that some of you are having trouble adding me as a "friend" 'cause clicking on my LJ "username" takes you to my blog.

Try this URL: http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?userid=9459326&t=I

That is all...

MovableType 3.2...

I've finally gotten around to upgrading to MT 3.2. You shouldn't notice anything.

For all you LJ types, 3.2 supports OpenID, so in theory, you can add me directly to your friends list - my OpenID URL is oubliette.org/~dberger/blog.

If you notice anything strange, lemme know.

Strange MT Bug

I'm using Movable Type on a sqlite2 database, and I discovered that after my upgrade to the 3.1.16 on the 26th, publishing was slightly strange. Older entries weren't being included in date-based archives.

I did a bit of poking around and discovered that they "fixed" a bug with timestamp handling - and that the fix caused the timestamp format in the database to change:

[alpha@sulphurous mt]$ sqlite mt.db
SQLite version 2.8.15
Enter ".help" for instructions
sqlite> select entry_created_on from mt_entry;
...
20050520205326
20050526171309
2005-05-26 17:23:11
2005-05-26 18:07:56
2005-05-26 22:53:38

The cause was the following code which had been added to lib/MT/ObjectDriver/DBI/sqlite.pm:

sub ts2db {
    sprintf '%04d-%02d-%02d %02d:%02d:%02d', unpack 'A4A2A2A2A2A2', $_[1];
}

Not sure why they wanted to change the storage format of a timestamp, but even if it was intentional, it didn't quite work as expected. Commenting out that code, touching the timestamps on the entries in the new format, and rebuilding the site "did the right thing."

MT Upgrade

Seems there was a bug in the software I use to run this blog that may have broken email notifications, but I'm not sure (since I don't get notified when I publish entries).

In any event, I've upgraded to the latest version which reports to fix that problem - so if you think I've just been silent, it may be that notifications were busted.

Oops...

I realized I've (once again) been forgetting to send email updates when I post an entry. (The software doesn't do it automagically, which is pretty much my only standing complaint with MT.)

So if you've been waiting for an email to come back and see what's new, I guess this is it :)

Is there anybody out there?

Two people have mentioned that comments haven't been working. Can someone (anyone) reading this please try posting a comment and let me know (by email) if it doesn't appear?

And the flowers are still standing!

Two extra points if you get the movie reference.

A while back I had an "issue" during a Moveable Type upgrade and while things seemed to be working, some stuff was slightly borked. (Yes, that's a technical term.) I think (hope) I've sorted the last few wrinkles - so if you notice anything strange happening, please let me know.

If you had previously signed up for email notifications, that's been lost, I'm afraid - and I haven't found the snippit of configuration to make it a self-service operation, so drop me an email and I'll put you back on the list.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...

Please excuse our dust...

Had a bit of an "oops" this morning - and spent more time than I'd care to admit putting Movable Type back together (let's just say that their database upgrade scripts should do more sanity checking before they start dropping tables).

I think I've stitched Frankenstein's monster back together correctly, but if you notice anything strage going on, let me know. One known issue is that the self-signup for email notifications is gone at the moment, once I remember/find the magic to put it back, I will.

Comments From the Peanut Gallery

Woah - someone's actually reading this. Not only that, they apparently tried to post a comment and couldn't ('cause I had comments turned off).

So I've turned on comments. I dunno that I'll say anything worth commenting about - and if it gets out of hand I'll likely turn it back off, but for the moment - comment away!

Oh, and Movable Type (which is quickly joining a short list of software that "just works") provides a RDF/RSS syndication feed (look on the lower right side of the front page) - so if you use an RSS news reader, or use a service like Live Journal or My Yahoo! that will let you add news feeds, that might be a good way to keep up without having to check back on the site to see updates.
