Happy Independence Day

It's easy to forget that the 4th of July has significance, that it's not just an excuse to take the day off work, eat too much, and indulge our predilection for pyrotechnics.

Dawnise and I went into downtown Winslow for the "grand old 4th" - which basically consisted of a street fair that was, as Brad put it, "like a Renaissance fair without any of the style" and a parade that boasted the "biggest inflatable eagle in the pacific northwest."

Um, yea.

It was fun, albeit steeped in the worst sort of saccharine patriotism imaginable. We caught a 3pm boat into Seattle and helped Janinne finish assembling food for the picnic, and then carted it, and ourselves, down the 4 block walk to Alki Beach. The food was great, and the company highly entertaining. And we even had our own little reenactment of West Side Story when the group of teens near us had a heated verbal exchange with a group of girls who thought the appropriate response to being bumped into was a quick right hook to the face. (It's a long story, I'm not really sure it makes any sense, and I'm positive it doesn't matter, so that's that.)

We made life-long friends with that very same group, however, when Janinne decided to turn over a tray of jello shots that we weren't going to get to. It was as if we'd given them precious metals or something. Guess it was better than the beer they were drinking ;)

The Elliot Bay fireworks display was good, the Eastlake display was arguably better, but mother nature and her lightning show really took center stage - every one of the collective "oohs" was at a lightning strike, not a man-made explosion.

Fighting our way out of West Seattle back to the ferry took way longer than we wanted, and as a result we fell into the scheduling hole between ferries - getting home just before 2 this morning. I was up, bright and early, at 6:30 - and I'm currently at work, working through my email and a cup of coffee.
