The Jury's Still Out

We trucked up to Port Angeles early this afternoon to pay a call on Luke and Kayla. On our way we had our first meal at India Oven - one of only three Indian restaurants we know of on our side of the peninsula.

The north-west has a serious lack of good Indian food - there's a place on the island, and it's terrible. There's a place in Silverdale - same owners as on the island, and while we haven't eaten there, we walked in once, and walked out before ordering. India Oven wasn't bad. It wasn't going to win any awards when stacked up against places like Diamond Palace or Taj Palace (both highly recommended if you're in their respective areas), but compared to most of the Indian we've had since moving up here, it was very serviceable.

My only real complaint was that when we said "spicy" the waiter must have run it through the "white" filter and come up with "mild." The Vindaloo was tasty, just not spicy - much better than the chunks of chicken in Campbell's tomato soup the Island place served. The paneer tika masala was also good, though we're used to paneer makani, which isn't quite as sweet. And we rounded the meal off with their mixed grill (good, but not extraordinary), naan and rice.

Anyway, after sating ourselves and packing up the leftovers, Dawnise drove to the humane society while I handled an ongoing crisis at work. We got there and I spent 20 minutes in the car on the phone, watching two people come out with the dogs we were there to visit on a leash.

When I finally went into the shelter, I found it to be small, and obviously underfunded. I filled out their application, they reviewed it, and I took Luke out for some yard time with Dawnise. We spent about 15 minutes with him, then returned him inside (where another person was waiting to "shop" him) and took out Kayla.

Both dogs were about 4 months old and very cute, and both were frantic, but neither really connected with Dawnise or I. They were pretty much uninterested in the human holding the leash, which I guess shouldn't be surprising given it seems they're getting plenty of visitors.

When we left, Luke had been adopted, and between not "clicking" with Kayla (either of them, really) and not wanting to rush into the decision just cause the shelter was closing, we told them we'd think about it and possibly return next week.

When we arrived home, the lady who runs the local (on Island) rescue left us a message saying we should stop in tomorrow - she was expecting a handful of "Katrina dogs" when we were there last weekend, so I suspect she got some.

Before leaving this morning I called the construction company that built our deck - we'd had an initial conversation with them about landscaping, and it seems like we'd better get that proverbial show on the road.
