First steps into a larger world

Dawnise and I made our first visit to the B.I. Sushi House this evening for dinner. It all started yesterday, when my boss and I went to the local sushi place near work (Flying Fish) for a business lunch, sat for 20-odd minutes without even ordering, and ended up grabbing Subway on our way back to the office. Sushi-interruptus.

We sat at the bar in front of the chef, so we could watch him work. Dawnise ordered a spicy tuna roll and a cucumber roll, and I did my usual - some sashimi, some sushi, and a roll or two - all his choice - and a Kirin.

When he put my sashimi in front of me, we'd watched him make it (not knowing it was mine) and Dawnise had commented on which fishes she thought looked good, and which ones didn't. With very little prompting, she tried (for the first time, as far as I'm aware) raw fish, and discovered that she basically likes it.

When my sushi arrived (eel, spicy scallops, and a third I've already forgotten), she tried most of them too (not the scallops) and liked them.

She ordered a "healthy roll" (a veggie roll), and the chef delivered my first roll - a tempura salmon roll that was really, really, tasty. I ate half, and Dawnise ate half. As she was proclaiming how good it was I challenged her to find it on the menu.

And that, in a nutshell, is why I always let the chef choose.

My second roll was also excellent - a sesame tuna roll - the whole thing tempura dipped and fried. Yum. We shared that one, too.

I'm quite proud of Dawnise for being so adventurous. She tried 6 types of raw fish, and eel - which is 6 more kinds of raw fish than she'd ever tried before. Not bad for someone who grew up equating fish to canned tuna. Not bad at all :).
