Games, Dinner and a Faire
Friday night we had our first open-invitation game night at our place. Brad and Kat came over, but our new proto-friends Todd and Bronwyn had to bow out at the last minute. Since they were the only folks I had thought to actually tell about said invitation more than a few hours in advance, that was that. We made dinner, played a few games of Munchkin and Once Upon a Time, and generally had a good time.
Saturday morning we got up a bit late, did some errands around town, including getting rid of the TV the movers broke. I decided I wanted fish for dinner, and Dawnise had been saying she wanted to do the Pikes Market fish thing, so we hopped a ferry to Seattle and wandered around Pike's market for a few hours. We came home with two pounds of fresh Salmon, a pound of sashimi-quality Tuna, a half pound of scallops nearly the diameter of a soda can, and a bunch of fresh rosemary - not to mention other random and sundry stuff we picked up along the way.
I had called our neighbors up the hill, David and Marcia, and invited their answering machine over for dinner, but they hadn't called back by the time we got home and were starting to prep the fish. Just as I asked Dawnise to keep an eye out for their cars, Marcia drove past, on her way home from work. We flagged her down, discovered that David (who's a paramedic) was on shift, and invited her to come back down for dinner, which she did.
I whipped up a rum/honey/rosemary marinade for the salmon, and used a bit of the infamous charcoal salt on the tuna. Dawnise got inspired and came up with a marinade using habanero pepper jelly, peach schnapps, and marjoram which came out wonderfully. We divided the salmon and did a bit of each. I dredged the scallops in a butter/lemon/garlic sauce and tossed it all on the BBQ. The scallops came out as an appetizer, along with french bread and oil dipping sauce, and the meal was rounded out with rice, a salad, and some wine. Marcia stayed out chatting with us well past her bed-time, and we greatly enjoyed the chance to get to know her a bit better.
This morning Brad, Kat and Dawnise and I went to the Port Angeles Pirate Faire. It was much smaller than we expected - being an established faire and all - but we had a good time. Dawnise ended up getting measured for the full-length leather bodice/dress she'd been admiring, and I picked up a new self-bow to replace the one that had shattered on me after drying out in the So. Cal. climate. We took in a Tortuga Twins show (always funny in a sophomoric sort of way), and chatted briefly with Thomas Wood - a fire eater/(contact) juggler and all around talented guy before joining the audience for his show.
On the way home we hit a Wendy's for some food (yet another Faire with a severe lack of "Faire Food") and terrorized some mundanes.
A good weekend all in all.
