Mother's Day in the Deep South
Thursday night I took the 5:30 boat home from work, finished gathering our luggage, and turned around and caught a boat back to Seattle, where we got in a car and departed for SEATAC.
We managed to find a fast food place still open, and grabbed a sandwich for dinner as we got on the plane. Our flight left mostly on time at 10:30, and we caught sleep in fits and starts 'till we arrived in D.C. the next morning around six o'clock. Our connecting flight to Atlanta was delayed slightly, but we still go into Atlanta around 9:30, as scheduled.
My sister and brother picked us up from the airport, and we went back to her res hall at Oglethorpe, dropped our luggage, and wandered down to a "mainstream-counter-culture-shopping-district" called Little Five Points to kill some time 'till my parents arrived.
Our late lunch/early dinner that night at a local Chili's was the first meal that the whole family's had together in a long time. That night there was a wine and cheese reception for the graduating seniors, after which Dawnise, my brother, and my parents drove back to their house in Cumming (about 40 minutes north of Atlanta proper) and my sister spent her last night in the res hall with her room mate.
The next morning we went to the official commencement ceremony, which was blessedly short (the graduating class was only around 200 people) and early enough that it wasn't hot out. After the ceremony, we changed into street clothes and started moving my sister out of her dorm - which took 'till around 2pm.
We drove the stuff back to my parents house, unloaded the cars, and went out to a local Applebee's like eatery called O'Charlies for another late lunch/early dinner. From there the ladies went shopping for the dessert reception they were hosting at their place in the evening.
The reception went well - fresh fruit, some sweets, and a nice bottle of French champagne (thanks, Tony).
This morning we woke up, had from-scratch waffles for breakfast before leaving for the Georgia Renaissance Festival. The site was pretty cool - far better than the recent site of Southern, or any Northern faire sight we'd ever been to. The Tortuga Twins were amusing - in the tradition of Manly Men in Tights, or the Bold and Stupid Men show. As a surprise, Dead Bob was at the faire after a many year absence - Dead Bob was the same, the dummy holding him was different - and we caught "his" last show of the day before leaving the fair.
We being in garb were way outnumbered by the mundanes - and the jokes and puns evoked by Dawnise's pair (for those who haven't been to fair with us - Dawnise has, for years, put a pear in her cleavage) were uninspired - and seemed infinitely more slimy when said with a southern drawl.
We're about to head for a late mother's day dinner - perhaps we'll get lucky and miss most of the crowd...

Meant to ask about that (the whole *really* Southern Faire thing). Is the overall attitude (including participants) toward the event much less "serious" from a historical re-creation standpoint (compared to the California events), or is that just the locals/'danes? I know I got that impression from the Colorado faire years ago (which also had a great site)...
